Rodriguez celebrate 60th wedding anniversary

in Anniversaries by

Daisy Carmen Lucia Perez-Gonzalez married Roberto Rodriguez-Rodriguez on a Sabado de Gloria in Habana, Cuba, on April 9, 1955. On their wedding day, she wore a short-sleeved white laced dress, fitted at the waist, with an imperial collar and a full skirt that ended just below her knees. She also wore matching bridal gloves—or mitones, as they used to be called in the old country—and carried a bouquet of white lilies of the valley.

The daughter of Alfredo Perez-Travieso, a transportation entrepreneur, and Carmelina Gonzalez-Zorrilla, Daisy was young, beautiful and studied with the Catholic nuns. Roberto still remembers dancing with her at her quinceanera, a celebration of her passage to womanhood, and the pearls on her pink gown waltzing in the night.

Roberto’s father, Evaristo Rodriguez-Aguilar, known by most as El Nino, was the Mayor or Alcalde of Caraballo, a rural town in the province of Habana, near the Matanza border. He was a respected leader in his community. His mother, Andrea Rodriguez-Lorenzana, was one of seven sisters.

On Sept. 26, 1971, Daisy and Roberto left their motherland and families of origin. They were determined to take their children out of Cuba and flee Castro’s regime, first to Spain and then to Illinois. Aurora has been their home for over 40 years. Their marriage has been blessed with a daughter (a Sugar Grove resident), two sons, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Much has happened during their 60-year marriage. There has been laughter, tears and lot of hard work, but they stayed together through it all, a miracle in today’s society. Their family and friends raise a glass in their honor, celebrating their 60 years together and wish them many more.
