Covenant of Grace Church relocates to Sugar Grove

in Faith by

SUGAR GROVE—Covenant of Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, originally located in the Park District Building at 327 W. Wilson St. in Batavia, has temporarily relocated to John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St. in Sugar Grove.

Covenant of Grace began meeting at John Shields Elementary on June 2.

Earlier this year, John Shields Elementary School presented to Covenant of Grace the possibility to host a summer Nature Camp program, and to serve as a gathering place for Sunday worship. Covenant of Grace and the Kaneland School District struck an agreement. The elders of the church, with approval from the congregation, finalized the decision to relocate from Batavia to Sugar Grove.

“The congregation has responded well to the move and those who live in Sugar Grove area are particularly enthusiastic,” Covenant of Grace Paster Jim Megchelsen said. “The first few weeks at the school have gone very well and (the) facility has been well received by the congregation.”

The new location is a benefit to the church, given that John Shields Elementary is a short distance from a forthcoming permanent location. The congregation purchased a piece of property at Bliss Road and Denny Road in Sugar Grove in 2011, with plans to construct a new church facility there.

Covenant of Grace was founded in the late 1990s as a daughter church of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, Ill. Today, the church has a congregation of approximately 100.

“I personally have been very thankful to serve as the pastor of the congregation and enjoy the church very much,” Megchelsen said.

“With the other Christian churches in the Sugar Grove and Fox Valley area, we hope to proclaim the good news of God’s grace through Jesus Christ, and see Him glorified in all that we do.”
