Local residents named to NIU dean’s list

DEKALB—The following local residents were named to the Northern Illinois University dean’s list for the spring 2013: Meagann Ayala, Konstantin Paraskevov, Ryan Rieger, Alyssa Koch, Kristofer Mirjanic, Jack Karamanian, Beth Hesik, David Schmidt, Mallory Huml, Kelsey Lenhardt, Danny Hess, Jessica Otto, Linnea Scherer, Austin McElderry and Mackenzie Rich, all of Elburn; Matthew Kramer, Meredith Wood, Bridget Hankes, Michelle Bird, Alec Krueger, Daniel Moore, Adam Canzoneri and Kelsey Zollinger, all of Sugar Grove; and Michael Jenny, Alyse Olson, Rebecca Siebens, Lauren Boddy, Amy Rivers and Nicholas Thompson, all of Maple Park.

Students enrolled in the colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts, and Health and Human Sciences, must meet a minimum semester grade point average of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale. Students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology must meet a minimum semester grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Elburn residents receive degrees from Bradley University

PEORIA, ILL.—Elburn residents Perren Palpant and Jeffrey Smith received degrees from Bradley University during commencement ceremonies on May 18.

Palpant earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, while Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. Both students graduated cum laude.

Hanson of Elburn named to Huntington University’s dean’s list

HUNTINGTON, IND.—Peter Hanson of Elburn was named to the dean’s list at Huntington University for the spring semester of the 2012-13 school year.

Hanson, a sophomore, is a film production major.

The dean’s list is published two times per year at Huntington University. The honor recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement during the previous semester. Honorees must be classified as regular students, be enrolled full time with a load of 12 hours or more in graded courses, and must achieve a semester grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale.

Zander named to St. Olaf College dean’s list

NORTHFIELD, MINN.—Hilary Zander of Elburn was recently named to the St. Olaf College dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester. Zander, a sociology/anthropology and biology major, is the daughter of William and Donna Zander.

The dean’s list recognizes students with a semester grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4-point scale.

Johnson earns degree from Iowa State University

MACOMB/MOLINE, ILL.—The following local residents earned academic degrees proceeding the spring 2013 semester at Western Illinois University: Cody Parillo (Bachelor of Business, information technology systems) and Shannon Rosenwinkel (Bachelor of Science, psychology) of Elburn; Jamela Charmaine Thompson (Bachelor of Science, zoology) and Nick Wagner (Bachelor of Business, management) of Sugar Grove; and John Brennan (Bachelor of Business, supply chain management) and Bradley Fabrizius (Bachelor of Science, agricultural business) of Maple Park.

Overall, bachelor’s degrees were awarded to 1,251 WIU graduates following the spring 2013 semester.

Elburn residents earn degrees from Carthage College

KENOSHA, WIS.—Elburn residents Lauren Gould and Emily Papke received degrees from Carthage College during commencement on May 26.

Gould received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Papke received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and communication, and graduated Cum Laude.

Elburn residents named to Carthage College dean’s list

KENOSHA, WIS.—Elburn residents Lily Garrison, Lauren Gould and Justin Hall were recently named to the Carthage College dean’s list for academic excellence during the spring semester of 2013.

Dean’s list honors are accorded to Carthage students who achieve a 3.5 grade point average while carrying at least 14 credit hours during a semester.

Foguth of Elburn named to Benedictine College dean’s list

ATCHISON, KAN.—Rachel Foguth of Elburn was recently named to the Benedictine College dean’s list for the spring semester.

To qualify for the dean’s list, students must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours and possess a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.9.

Komel studies abroad in Jamaica

ROCK ISLAND, ILL.—Casey Komel of Elburn was one of 19 Augustana College students who traveled to Jamaica during winter recess to complete service learning. The students had the opportunity to learn and teach alongside young Jamaicans at the Alpha Schools of central Kingston.

Komel is a senior majoring in biology and biology education.

Krauss named to Bryan College dean’s list

DAYTON, TENN.—Wendy Krauss of Sugar Grove was among 173 undergraduates named to the Bryan College dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester.

Wendy, daughter of Mark and Donna Krauss of Sugar Grove, was recognized for outstanding academic achievement. Students earn dean’s list recognition by recording a grade average in the top 25 percent of grades by students in the traditional undergraduate program for that semester.

Sutherland graduates with honors from the University of Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Greg Sutherland, a 2008 graduate of Kaneland High School and a 2010 graduate of College of DuPage, graduated cum laude from University of Rochester on May 19. He was awarded a B.A. with highest distinction, Russian Studies; received the Mildred Burton Award for Excellence in Language Majors; was elected to the Dobro Slovo National Slavic Honor Society; and completed the U of R Take Five Scholars Program, which enrolls select undergrads for a tuition-free fifth year of study.

Additionally, Sutherland completed the 2011 Summer Language Intensive Program at Saint Petersburg State University, Russia, and the 2012 Intensive Summer Program in Advanced Russian at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. He served as the elected president of Iota Chapter, The Order of St. Anthony Hall/Fraternity of Delta Psi.

Sutherland was awarded a meritorious FLAS Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education to attend graduate school at Duke University, Department of Eurasian, Slavic and Russian Studies.

Zander graduates from St. Olaf College

KHS’ Bradford wins scholarship

KANELAND—Kaneland High School senior Blake Bradford was recently named the winner of the 2013 Kane County Pheasants Forever Scholarship Award.

Bradford, a Maple Park resident, earned the $1,000 scholarship because of his commitment and passion for the outdoors and conservation. He will attend college with an interest in environmental science.

Staehely graduates from Creighton University

Local residents named to WIU dean’s list for spring 2013

MACOMB/MOLINE, ILL.—The following local residents were named to the Western Illinois University dean’s list for the spring 2013 semester: Shannon Rosenwinkel of Elburn, Sarah Goodrich of Maple Park, and Austin Robinson and Cody Stults of Sugar Grove.

To receive this award, an undergraduate student must earn at least a 3.6 grade point average on a scale of 4.0.

Weigelmann named to Marquette dean’s list for spring 2013

Weigelmann is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.
