Morgan named to WCC president’s list

SUGAR GROVE—Sarah Morgan of Elburn was named to the Waubonsee Community College (WCC) president’s list after completing her first semester in the honors program with a grade point average of 4.0. She has been invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and will be inducted March 4.

Sarah is a 2011 graduate of Kaneland High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Knights of Distinction, and recognized as an Illinois State Scholar. She is attending WCC as a Lucile Gustafson scholarship recipient.

Sarah’s parents are Robert and Nancy Morgan of Elburn.

Maras to perform with Augustana Choir

ROCK ISLAND, ILL.—Kailey Maras of Elburn performed with the Augustana Choir when it returned to the Quad Cities for a home concert on March 9 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa.

Maras, a senior from Elburn, is majoring in music education vocal.

Matt and Fern Walsh of Crystal Lake, Ill., announce the birth of their son, Alexander Kunadt, who was born Jan. 13, 2012, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock, Ill. He weighed 9 pounds and was 20 inches long.

The grandparents are Pracha and Prapaporn Kasiwong of Phattalung, Thailand, and Robert and Bette Walsh of Lindenwood, Ill.

Bruce earns dean’s list honors at Maryville

ST. LOUIS—Jessica Bruce of Elburn earned dean’s list honors for the fall 2011 semester at Maryville University of St. Louis. Bruce is a student in Maryville’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Maryville’s undergraduate students are eligible for the dean’s list when they complete at least 12 Maryville University credit hours in a semester with a minimum of a 3.33 grade-point average.

Gaston earns place on dean’s list at Berklee College of Music

BOSTON—Berklee College of Music announces that Alec Gaston of Sugar Grove has earned placement on the dean’s list for the fall semester of the 2011 academic year. To be eligible for this honor, a full-time student must achieve a grade point average of 3.4 or above; a part-time student must achieve a grade point average of 3.6 or above.

Martin, Johnson to wed

Paul and Bambi Johnson of Maple Park announce the engagement of their son, Parker, to Brittany Martin, daughter of George and Brenda Martin of Tinley Park, Ill.

The bride-to-be is a 2004 graduate of Victor J. Andrew High School in Tinley Park, Ill., and 2009 graduate of Northern Illinois University with a degree in elementary education. She is currently teaching sixth grade at Hadley Jr. High School in Tinley Park.

The future groom is a 2004 Kaneland High School graduate, and 2008 graduate of NIU with a degree in physical education/kinesiology. He is currently employed by Motion Fitness in Rolling Meadows, Ill., as a project manager.

The wedding will take place June 23, 2012, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Palos Heights, Ill. The couple plans on traveling to Mexico for their honeymoon.

St. Paul Lutheran Church offers pre-school classes

Holy Cross hosts fundraising event

BATAVIA—Building a new community education center and the first Catholic school in the Rockford Diocese are just some of the many accomplishments for Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia. On Saturday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m., Holy Cross will host “A Knight at the Pub,” a fundraising gala to support continuing community, parish based projects.

The event, sponsored by Moss Family Funeral Homes, is being held at Piper’s Banquets in Aurora and will feature an array of culinary delights, including hors d’oeuvres, a buffet meal and desserts.

Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs and Sox tickets, plus silent auction and basket raffles will be featured. The highlight of the evening will spotlight a $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 cash prize raffle ticket drawing.

Auction items include: a one-week Florida vacation, hot air balloon ride, flat-screen TV, and many more items auctioned live by official Master of Ceremonies, Monsignor Daniel Deutsch.

Dinner tickets are $100 per person, or $85 for two or more tickets, and can be purchased at the Holy Cross parish office, 2300 Main St. in Batavia, or online through the Holy Cross website, www.holycross-batavia.org.

Ardath L. Pierce

in 2012 Obituaries by

Ardath Pierce, 71, of Maple Park, formerly of Wheaton, Ill., passed away at her daughter’s home in North Riverside, in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 8, 2012, following a brief battle with cancer.

She was an avid gardener and loved baking and entertaining. She worked at the Batavia Jewel for almost 20 years, where she was known as “The Cookie Lady.”

She is survived by her sons, Timothy (Nancy) and Douglas Pierce; her daughter, Victoria (Phil Malhiot) Pierce; three granddaughters, Jennifer, Laura and Christina.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oakley Pierce; and her parents, Alfred and Edna Prestebak.

Visitation and a funeral service to celebrate her life were held on March 12, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St. in Elburn. Rev. Roger Crites, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Geneva, officiated. Interment followed at Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Elmhurst, Ill.

Local residents named to Kishwaukee College dean’s list
